A south-west route can start around Crown Point, close to A.N.R. Robinson International Airport. From here, you can reach several popular coastal areas without a long drive.
Start with Pigeon Point, one of Tobago's best-known beaches. The beach has calm water, white sand, and the famous thatched jetty. It also has restaurants, watersports, and other facilities for a longer beach stop. You can then continue towards Buccoo, around 7 kilometres from Crown Point. Buccoo gives you another coastal setting, with a village atmosphere and access to Buccoo Bay.
For a longer coastal drive, start in Scarborough and head towards Castara. The road distance is about 19 kilometres, with around 24 minutes of direct driving.
However, you should treat that time as the drive without sightseeing. Stops along the route can easily turn the journey into a half-day or full-day trip. The drive takes you away from Tobago's capital and towards the greener north-west coast. You can stop around Plymouth, Mount Irvine, or other coastal areas before continuing north.
As you approach Castara, the landscape becomes hillier and more forested. Castara is between green hills and the Caribbean Sea. The village is known for swimming, snorkelling, fishing, and its relaxed coastal setting. Once there, spend a few hours around Castara Bay instead of immediately continuing farther north. You can walk around the village, swim, eat locally, or simply enjoy the coast.
Choose the north-east coast if you want a longer one-day drive with more rainforest and coastal scenery. This route suits travellers who want to spend more time on the road. From Scarborough, drive east along the Windward Road towards Roxborough and Speyside. Scarborough to Speyside covers about 36 kilometres and takes around 45 minutes without stops.
The route passes smaller communities, green hills, and sections of Tobago's Atlantic coast. Instead of rushing straight to Speyside, choose one or two stops along the way. Once you reach Speyside, you get wide coastal views towards Little Tobago and Goat Island. The village is also known as a base for snorkelling, diving, and boat trips.
Continue north to Charlotteville, which sits around Man O' War Bay. It is a traditional fishing village with a quieter setting than Tobago's south-west. Spend your remaining time around the bay before starting the return drive. Avoid adding too many extra stops if you need to return towards Crown Point.
In two or three days, you can explore Tobago by car across most of the island. You also have more time for beaches, villages, short walks, and longer stops. A longer trip also makes the driving easier to manage. You do not need to rush between opposite coasts in one day. Instead, you can divide Tobago into the east, north, west, and rainforest areas.
Make the Main Ridge Forest Reserve the main destination for your second day. The reserve covers a large part of Tobago's mountainous interior. The drive becomes greener and cooler as you climb away from the coast. Roads also become more winding, with thick forest close to both sides.

Driving through the Main Ridge feels different from following Tobago’s coastal roads. The forest runs across much of the island’s higher interior. These roads include climbs, bends, shaded sections, and changing visibility. Rain can also make the road surface wetter and reduce your comfortable driving speed.
Cloud and mist can appear around higher parts of the island. This can make short mountain sections feel slower than similar distances near the coast.
